HARDOX is a quenched and tempered wear plate which has been developed at SSAB Oxelosund. The product was launched on the market in 1970 and has been continually developed, and is now synonymous with high quality, good flatness and good surface finish. Although HARDOX plate is 3 - 4 times harder than ordinary high strength structural plate, its excellent weldability and machinability properties make the material remarkably easy to work with.

Due to its high strength, HARDOX plate has better dimensional stability and thus sustains a smaller amount of permanent deformation. Thinner plate can also be used, which then results in a higher payload. The excellent flatness of HARDOX plate is also of great importance in the production of tipper bodies, for instance.

Various other applications for Swedish Steels are overhead cranes, excavator booms and buckets, water tanks, concrete crushers and structural steelwork. It can also be used in dumper bodies, mobile cranes and agricultural machinery.

During the last two decades market leaders SSAB Oxelosund AB have developed a wear theory which forms a wear-prediction model known as WearCalc. This means our customers can receive extra support in the form of an investigation of their mobile plant and/or process equipment from a wear perspective, resulting in a written report detailing the estimated wear life of the different steels used in various applications.

The object of the report is to estimate the abrasiveness of the different types of rock, for example, handled and processed at any particular mine. Samples are taken from both the ore and the waste rock and assessments are made of both. When successfully completed these assessments estimate the ‘slide abrasiveness’ and the other the ‘impact abrasiveness’ of the associated steels and give the ‘relative wear life’ of the machinery’s material.HARDOX wear plate meets strict demands on wear resistance. The unique combination of consistent and high hardness, high strength and excellent toughness makes the material well suited for a wide variety of applications.
